Orkney Fencing Club was delighted to team up with Active Schools Orkney for an activity that brought together two big passions: celebrating the beauty and character of the Orkney Islands, and sharing the excitement of fencing with new people.
Taking Fencing to the Northern Isles
Three visits were planned to the Northern Isles of Orkney, with school pupil sessions in the mornings and adult sessions in the afternoons. A further session was also held in Kirkwall for school pupils, giving even more young people the chance to pick up a sword and try something new.
Big Turnouts and First-Time Fencers
One of the best parts of the activity was seeing people who had never thought about trying fencing come along and give it a go. Participants had the chance to try both fencing and seated fencing, making the sessions welcoming, inclusive and full of energy.
For islands with populations ranging from around 320 to 550 people, the response was brilliant. On the final day in Stronsay, 11 school pupils and 10 adults took part — a fantastic turnout and a real celebration of island enthusiasm.
Sunshine, Swordseats and Smiles
A standout moment came in Stronsay, where the Swordseats were used outside in the sunshine. It was a brilliant way to round off the activity: fresh air, fencing fun and a memorable island setting.
Well done to the coaching volunteers who had to get up early for the long boat journeys, Active Schools Orkney and, most of all, the islanders who embraced the sessions with such warmth and enthusiasm. What a treat!
