Sainsbury's 2012 School Games

The Sainsbury's 2012 School Games  will be held from the 6th - 9th May 2012 in the Olympic fencing venue at Excel in London - it will be the last event held there before it is locked down for the main games.

Fencing will take place over 2 days but the squad are required to participate in other activities over the four day period - this is likely to be an exercise to test the spectator facilities for other sports, making it a truly unique experience!

The bad news for Scotland is that this event takes place right in the middle of the SQA exam period.  However, we have decided to enter a squad as usual but we are fully aware that many fencers who are in the Scottish exam system - and in particular their parents - may withdraw them from consideration.  We understand that UKSG has made provision with SQA for exams to be taken in London - however, this may not be viewed as a viable compromise.  Details of this arrangement will be made available when we have them.

The criteria for selection are set by the organisers as follows and are the same as for previous years:

There are 4 fencers allowed per event so each home country will select 24 fencers, these must be the same fencers for the individual & team events.

Selection for the first 2 places will be done from the U20 ranking list used for selecting the British team for the world championships as of 1st March 2012 (providing these 2 fencers are in the top 75% of the list).

Selection for the 3rd & 4th place will be made by Scottish Fencing's Performance Committee and will be subject to ratification by the Board. Where fencers have not been selected for the first two places from the U20 ranking list by default, these two places will also be allocated by the selectors.  For selection for the 3rd and 4th places (and higher places if they are not selected by default from the Junior ranking) the selection committee will also take into account cadet and senior rankings and results (as appropriate) as well as any other criteria deemed to be relevant.

The selectors reserve the right to omit a fencer from selection if they deem that fencer's disciplinary record to be unsatisfactory.
