Round 2 Opening - New Fencer Recruitment Initiative

Round 2 of the New Fencer Recruitment Initiative is now open.  Applications should be submitted by Friday 7th October 2016.

Fencing in Scotland needs a constant flow of new entrants to the sport, if we are to grow and also to perform better in competitions.  Over the past couple of years, several coaches and clubs have made great contributions to this challenge by running plastic fencing classes for primary school children or other beginners’ classes.

Scottish Fencing wants to encourage this growth and recognises that sometimes funding is a limiting factor to the delivery of introductory beginners’ classes and courses.  This season (2016-17), a number of grants of £500 will be made available to clubs and coaches to support the delivery of a fencing programme introducing new participants to the sport.

The grants are limited and will be awarded on a competitive basis.   To apply, the club/coach needs to show there is a plan in place, staff are appropriately qualified and experienced and have access to the facilities and equipment necessary to deliver the proposed course.

The key rules are:

  • Applicants will need to give details of the beginners’ programme, and how the fencers will be supported through to their first competition and beyond.
  • Programmes should engage an agreed number of new participants – all participants of the programme should be new to the sport.
  • The programme should consist of a series of weekly sessions, leading up to participation in an appropriate competition.
  • Sessions must be led by qualified coaching staff that have an awareness and experience of working with the target group.  All coaching staff should have the appropriate qualifications including first aid and be a member of the appropriate PVG Scheme.
  • Clubs applying must participate in Scottish Fencing’s new “SwordMark Scotland” scheme and be working towards at least Standard level.
  • Applicants should demonstrate how the project will create sustainable activity after the initial sessions, and provide a route for all participants to be able to continue to participate in fencing regularly.
  • Each funded programme must deliver an agreed number of new members of Scottish Fencing, evidenced by a list of names and membership numbers.  Memberships may be at Starter, Recreational or Competitive level.
  • Limited funds are available and will be allocated on merit, judged by a selection group.  Funds will be released once Scottish Fencing receives a final report on the programme, including participation levels and member details.
  • There are 3 rounds of funding.  Key dates for applicants are as follows:
